What I Needed After My Stroke
Practical Support for a Very Different Daily Life
In December of 2022, my life changed instantly when I suffered a ruptured brain aneurysm and a stroke. Even after months of hard work in rehabilitation, I was left with physical disabilities and severe stroke fatigue. I didn’t need help with personal hygiene, but losing the full use of my left side made daily life incredibly frustrating. Tasks I used to do without thinking became nearly impossible.
I needed dependable support with the everyday responsibilities that had become physically difficult to manage on my own—especially laundry, household tasks, errands, and the routines that helped keep my home and daily life organized. Just as importantly, I wanted that help in a way that respected my independence and allowed me to keep doing as much for myself as I could.
Building Trust and a New Routine
Support That Respected My Independence
One of the things that mattered most to me was finding someone who could help without making me feel like I had lost control of my own life. Mary learned what I could still do for myself, where I genuinely needed assistance, and how to step in without taking over.
As we settled into a routine, that balance became incredibly important. Mary helped with the physically demanding tasks that had become difficult after my stroke while still encouraging me to remain involved, make my own choices, and keep as much independence as possible in my everyday life.
“Mary never made me feel helpless. She helped with the things I could no longer manage safely while still treating me like the independent person I had always been.”
